Action Pledge

Take the original R-Word “My Words Matter” Pledge by Jenna Glatzer:

“I pledge that I will not use the words “retard” or “retarded” to mean “stupid.” I understand that this is hurtful to people who have disabilities and people who love them, so I will be careful with my words. I will also try to remember to pay attention when other people use these words, and I’ll ask them to stop. “

NOTE: This site is an information resource.  We believe the discussion should take place in schools, at work and every place this word is heard and found offensive. Any comments that do not reflect that effort or do not include a valid email address will not be approved.

  1. I pledge to never say re**rded or any other offensive term against or in general about mentaly/phisically challenged people because they are just like you and me not any different and just because they seem different god made his children the same and thats how we are

  2. I pledge that I will not use the words “retard” or “retarded” or “those goofy bastards” to mean “stupid.” I understand that this is hurtful to people who have disabilities and people who love them, so I will be careful with my words. I will also try to remember to pay attention when other people use these words, and I’ll ask them to stop. “

  3. I’m still a teenager and I’ve used the word “retard” so many times, and I had a speaker come in and tell me about the use of this word. I will never forgive myself for saying it. Insulting someone with this word is so low and absolutely thoughtless. I will never use it again.

  4. I work with special need kids whom have dounsindrem. They are very SMART, UNIQUE, WARM HEARTED AND SHA’LL NEVER BE CALLED THE “R” WORD UNLESS IT’S USED BY THE MEANINGS OF DISABILITY.

  5. I’m so glad that this website (and this pledge) exists. I’m sure that I’ve used the r-word to mean ‘stupid’ on a couple of occasions as a teen, but I know that I never will again. I’m currently preparing to be a teacher, and I’m going to do my part to ensure that my students don’t use it, either. The world would be a kinder place without it!
