Action Pledge

Take the original R-Word “My Words Matter” Pledge by Jenna Glatzer:

“I pledge that I will not use the words “retard” or “retarded” to mean “stupid.” I understand that this is hurtful to people who have disabilities and people who love them, so I will be careful with my words. I will also try to remember to pay attention when other people use these words, and I’ll ask them to stop. “

  1. I am in LOVE with this campaign. I am so glad to see that people are making the effort to stop using the R word. For as long as i can remember ive told people to not say the R word. If i hear someone say it, ill call them out on it and wait for them to repeat the sentence with another word in place of that bad word. I just personally think its a degrading, demeaning, hurtful, and all around rude word. I have always worked with kids with disabilities, and when i heard about this campaign, I was so excited. It just breaks my heart when people say the R word. Its just like calling another kid at recess stupid. Its bullying, whether you say it to someone with disabilities, or saying it to someone without, or just using it as an adjective. I LOVE THIS CAMPAIGN AND WEBSITEEEEE(:

  2. Being a teenager this word just rolls off the tounge. Not until seventh grade when they had given a huge speech had I realized that it does efect people. Since then I haven’t use the R-word and when friends of mine do use I highly discourage it. Even though they may not realize it may hurt someone.I try to tell them to imagine being in the other persons shoes and it gets them to think. So I’m 15 years old and 100% behind this campaign! & I apologize for my choice of words in the past.

  3. I am thankful that you’ve helped me become more aware of how this word hurts people when it’s used thoughtlessly and ignorantly.

Thanks to Mark from Gahanna Lincoln HS, who made a great video that’s making its way around Columbus. Really nice work, and you’ve made a lot of people think!
