Action Pledge

Take the original R-Word “My Words Matter” Pledge by Jenna Glatzer:

“I pledge that I will not use the words “retard” or “retarded” to mean “stupid.” I understand that this is hurtful to people who have disabilities and people who love them, so I will be careful with my words. I will also try to remember to pay attention when other people use these words, and I’ll ask them to stop. “

  1. I will continue to raise awareness to those around me who do not have the pleasure of working with the exceptional human beings with whom I have been granted the opportunity to treat over the past 18 years… It is my hope that people will cease using this archaic and hurtful word.

  2. My aunt has Downs Syndrome. This helps me to understand the amount of offense that this word gives. Not a day goes by that I don’t hear my peers use the word “retard”. I always try to correct my friends, and they will remember for ten minutes, but then forget again. I know that the usage of this hurtful word has become out of control. We can change that! Spread awareness and tell your friends to sign this pledge page to stop using the “R Word”. Post this to your Facebook profile and challenge your friends! Act as if this word is a swear word, as it just about could be. Thanks for spreading awareness with me!

  3. I work with the special needs kids at my school every chance I get, and it really makes me mad when someone says the R word to mean stupid. I took the R word action pleadge! Please try to remember, every time you say this you are hurting someone.
