Action Pledge

Take the original R-Word “My Words Matter” Pledge by Jenna Glatzer:

“I pledge that I will not use the words “retard” or “retarded” to mean “stupid.” I understand that this is hurtful to people who have disabilities and people who love them, so I will be careful with my words. I will also try to remember to pay attention when other people use these words, and I’ll ask them to stop. “

  1. I pledge here and now to never use the word retard. I find it extremely offensive and outright mean. We were told when I was pregnant with my daughter that she had a high chance of having down syndrome. I didn’t have the amnio b/c it truly didn’t matter to us whether she had it or not, we would love her the same. She was born without down syndrome, but I now have a very soft spot for children with Downs. They are special and beautiful and a gift from God.

  2. the “R” word should never be used to describe anything and if you are talking about someone with a disability, then say that because we all have disabilities.
