Take the original R-Word “My Words Matter” Pledge by Jenna Glatzer:
“I pledge that I will not use the words “retard” or “retarded” to mean “stupid.” I understand that this is hurtful to people who have disabilities and people who love them, so I will be careful with my words. I will also try to remember to pay attention when other people use these words, and I’ll ask them to stop. “

MY SISTER IS 22 YRS OLD AND SHE HAS DOWN SYNDROME. I LOVE HER.
SHE IS IN TUNE IN WAYS YOU COULD NOT IMAGINE. I PLEDGE TO NOT SAY THE R WORD AND TO GET MY FRIENDS NOT TO SAY IT ALSO.
I want to be a special education teacher, and this word offends me more than anything. They didn’t chose to be like that and they are anything but stupid. You may not think that they can hear you, but they can. You will never here this word come out of my mouth. It is hurtful for them and I always ask people to refrain from saying the word in front of me. I pledge that I will never use the r word to mean stupid, ever.
I pledge to not use the R word and show respect to my friends.
I pledge to never to abuse R word or use it ever in my life time!
I heard about this site on the news. My family and I have been a big part of many individuals lives who are hurt every time this word is used. My parents do adult foster care for 3 wonderful people and many others through the years. Two of whom I am guardian over. We love all of them and work with 5 or 6 organizations that support and provide opportunities for many others in our area. My dad, sister, and I all work in a combination of either day programs, grouphomes, or doing one on one with people who still live at home and need assistance. We work continually to make sure those around us and with in our family use person first language and don’t view anyone as anything but a person with feelings, who deserve respect.
This is a great mission and I offer all the support I can give.
