Take the original R-Word “My Words Matter” Pledge by Jenna Glatzer:
“I pledge that I will not use the words “retard” or “retarded” to mean “stupid.” I understand that this is hurtful to people who have disabilities and people who love them, so I will be careful with my words. I will also try to remember to pay attention when other people use these words, and I’ll ask them to stop. “

I help kids with mental disabilities and as i watch them and how they are i realize, they are just like you and me, they just need more help than us. And to the people who use that offensive term, beware, because that could be you getting called retard. I WILL tell all my friends, neighbors, and family to take the pledge
I will never again use the r- word ever again in an offensive way. I pledge to these facts.

I pledge that I will not use the R word. The word has never been used in my household. It is not in my dictionary.

I pledged on many different websites to try to spread the word to end the word, and it hasn’t slipped for over a year. When you hear people say it, tell them to knock it off. People with mental disabilities are still people, and they deserve their dignity, too. Who are we to take that away from them?
My church’s youth group and I just got back from a servant event in Wisconsin. We volunteered at a place called Camp Matz. There we bonded with and helped developmentally disabled people. They were so wonderful and taught me a lot about patience and how to love every little thing. They were all so different. Grace was so smart and comprehended everything, she just couldnt get out her thoughts. Steve was the most active person I’ve ever met and if he could control his actions more I’ll bet he could be the best musician in the world because he loves music. The entire time all he wanted me to do was sing 🙂 Katie sang to me. She was so excited about listening to Michael Jackson and her face lit up when i learned how to dance Thriller for her. I think that everyone should have the same experience i did. I promise to never use the “R” word. Its offensive to my new friends, their loved ones, and me because they are my loved ones. i hope you all stick to your guns. good luck and love the little things.
