Take the original R-Word “My Words Matter” Pledge by Jenna Glatzer:
“I pledge that I will not use the words “retard” or “retarded” to mean “stupid.” I understand that this is hurtful to people who have disabilities and people who love them, so I will be careful with my words. I will also try to remember to pay attention when other people use these words, and I’ll ask them to stop. “

The “r” Word Campaign © 2007-2015, Rick & Wanda Felty – online since April 2007
At school, when this word is used, nobody really notices it because it is used so commonly and by almost every student. This is so sad because kids like my cousin Roger can’t help their condition. When people say the “r word,” it shows that they can’t find a kind or polite word to say.
2 years have passed since I signed the pledge at my school and I have not used the word at all. 🙂
I will NOT say the “r” word…. And I will correct those who do!
I pledge to not only continue to never use the “r” word but to correct anyone that I hear use it. It is not allowed in my house by anyone ever. Lets continue to spread the word.
I pledge never to use the R word in my daily conversations or written correspondence. It is hurtful to people born with disabilities, through no fault of their own;and singled out for ridicule by unthinking and meanspirited people.
