Take the original R-Word “My Words Matter” Pledge by Jenna Glatzer:
“I pledge that I will not use the words “retard” or “retarded” to mean “stupid.” I understand that this is hurtful to people who have disabilities and people who love them, so I will be careful with my words. I will also try to remember to pay attention when other people use these words, and I’ll ask them to stop. “

I pledge never to use the “r” word in a demeaning way towards another person and to spread the word to others not to use the word
I have worked with people who have developmental abilities outside of the considered norm for over 23 years. I find it Ironic that most will not use a racially identifying slang term. But, will use a word that is extremely disrespectful, hurtful, and harming to those of our society that are among the weakest. They are the ones we should be standing up for and yet we, as a society, so frequently do not.
“I pledge that I will not use the words “retard” or “retarded” to mean “stupid.” I understand that this is hurtful to people who have disabilities and people who love them, so I will be careful with my words. I will also try to remember to pay attention when other people use these words, and I’ll ask them to stop. “
I will never say the R word again and encourage the people around me to stop using it.
A suggestion: Lets make the ‘r’ word the new ‘F bomb’.
I thin this is a great thing to do. Often times as adults we use words and don’t really mean what the literal interpretation means. i have been striving to teach my kids tolerance and have taught them that the word hate is a bad word that they shouldn’t use until they are old enough to fully understand the meaning. Thanks for your dedication!
