Take the original R-Word “My Words Matter” Pledge by Jenna Glatzer:
“I pledge that I will not use the words “retard” or “retarded” to mean “stupid.” I understand that this is hurtful to people who have disabilities and people who love them, so I will be careful with my words. I will also try to remember to pay attention when other people use these words, and I’ll ask them to stop. “

seriously? it should never be used. have you ever worked with an individual with special needs? they are amazng people. everyone can be difficult at times, but it doesn’t put them into a whole new category.
I will never use the R Word! Your children are beautiful! And the loving nature of what your boys did is truly inspiring. It brought tears to my eyes! I support your cause whole heartedly!
My mom worked in special ed for a few years and all of the girls and boys she worked with were amazing and taught me and my mom many things. One of the girls my mom worked with is now our neighbor she is in High School, doing very well, and is so friendly. Also, my boyfriends sister is special and when people at her work talk negatively about her it bothers me so much, if they took the time to get to know her they would learn that she is the most loving, nicest, funniest girl she would give the shirt off of her back to help anyone or would do anything to help animals. I pledge to never say the r-word and if i hear someone saying it i will say something to them and try not to get angry at them for using it.
I pledge to remove the world “retard” or “retarded” from my vocabulary. Period. If something is “stupid”, it’s much easier to just say stupid. I’ve been blessed with a mind that’s free of illness and a body that’s able to do well on its own, and I know that if it were the other way around, it would break my heart to be called “retard.” Kindness is such a big powerful tool, and we can’t allow this slander of our special needs citizens to continue any longer.
I pledge that I will not use the words “retard” or “retarded” to mean “stupid.” I understand that this is hurtful to people who have disabilities and people who love them, so I will be careful with my words.
