RE: Offensive Lines In The Movie ‘The Change-Up’

Dear Universal Pictures,

I find the references to the slur words ‘retard’ and ‘downy’ in your movie ‘The Change-Up’ to be perpetuation of hate speech towards individuals and families with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

By using these types of words in comedies such as ‘The Change-Up you are contributing to a progression of prejudice against people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

I ask that you screen these hateful words from scripts in future movies and I demand a public apology for the use of these derogatory words in this movie.

Sincerely,

(Your Name)

Truitt’s “Respectful Language” Bill Effective September 1

To some, the “R” word hurts.

Austin — Today in Austin, Governor Rick Perry hosted a ceremonial bill signing for persons with developmental and intellectual disabilities (ID). On a personal level, the signing of HB 1481, by state Rep. Vicki Truitt (Keller) scores a moral victory for ID groups during an otherwise tough legislative session where a tight budget took center stage, and health and human services to the same population were cut.

Currently, individuals who receive services from certain state agencies are required to have the term “mental retardation” used to describe the agencies’ clientele. But persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities find the term “mentally retarded” highly offensive and hurtful.

Rep. Triutt said, “Those affected are people first, and there is a stigma associated with the “R” word. It costs nothing to adopt verbiage in state statutes to reflect the fact that we recognize individuals and their uniqueness, without using offensive terms to categorize and label these good Texans.”

The new law will require that, over time, the language used in statute and within various state agencies referencing persons with intellectual disabilities be changed to reference the person, rather than as the mentally retarded.

Truitt’s House Bill 1481 was broadly supported and easily passed during the recent 82nd Session of the Texas Legislature, but she said that some believed the bill to be a pointless attempt to be politically correct.

“There was some grumbling about my “politically correct (PC)” bill from a few legislators, and I was contacted by a constituent who said her sister is mentally retarded, and that she is not offended that her sister is referred to as such. But I had to wonder at the time what her sister thought about the matter,” said Truitt. She continued, “To those who think this is a fluffy, do-nothing bill, I would just ask them to momentarily put themselves in the position of one with an intellectual disability and imagine how hurtful it is to be called retarded. Intellectually disabled does not mean, ‘without feelings’.”

Representative Truitt is a seventh term legislator from Tarrant County representing the people of Grapevine, Colleyville, Southlake, Keller, Westlake, and parts of Trophy Club and far North Fort Worth

It’s time to cut ‘retard’ from use

Before you call yourself or someone else a retard, mong or spaz, imagine that you were using the N word, urges Nicky Clark.

“Humourless”, “politically correct” and “curbing free speech”. Since I’ve been struggling to turn the tide against the vogue use of the word retard, these are some of the nicer comments that have been made about me.

To me it’s really simple. Before you call yourself or someone else a retard, mong spaz, etc etc etc, imagine that you were using The N word.

A hateful epithet for stupid or foolish is just that. The fact that it denigrates disability not race or religion or sexuality does not excuse or explain it. Neither does it make it less damaging.

I never cease to be amazed at the hypocrisy of famous and not so famous people who see themselves as “right on” and yet comfortably use the word retard in normal speech.

I am accused of sensitivity over the issue, and to some extent, of course, this is true. But it’s not just my disabled children I’m thinking of.

The last time I battled a celebrity over their use of disablist language, Mencap staged an e-action and the chief executive of Ofcom found his email account deluged with hundreds of emails recounting harrowing stories.

Many disabled people can relate how damaged they have been by the abusive use of the word.

Hiding behind the right to free speech is not a defence. People gave their lives in the battle for free speech. I doubt they did so in order to give some hipster – claiming to be correcting myths and errors around disability through satire – the right to disabuse who they see fit.

Ironic use is also in vogue. However, when bigoted people hear disablist language they don’t necessarily trouble themselves to find the intricate subtext. When the people you are ironically abusing are people more than able to defend themselves then, please, be as ironic as you wish. However, when the person you abuse is likely to be mentally or actually harmed as a result of your coolness, it might be time to reconsider.

People not Punchlines is a campaign I’ve launched asking for the laws surrounding hate speech to be changed. Not created; we already have a hate speech law. It just needs to be amended because disabled people seem to have been forgotten.

Mind you, disabled people have historically been disenfranchised. During the Nazi rule of 1930s Germany, disabled people were labelled with a black triangle and exterminated. In fact, the persecution of disabled people began because the parents of a learning disabled boy asked Hitler’s permission to have their “defective” child euthanised. After that, the mobile gas vans began arriving at the institutions and the disabled children, who the press propaganda machines stated were taking the bread from the mouths of “decent Germans”, were “dealt with”.

So when it comes to human rights and human wrongs, disabled people have suffered. Isn’t it time we began to make things right by granting rights? I’m not referring to the Disability Discrimination Act. We can, every one of us, do something today that improves life for disabled people immediately. We can simply decide not to say something. Because compared to fashion speak, compared to being edgy, how cool is that?

Lady Gaga Apologizes for ‘Retarded’ Remark

Gaga did a quick about-face and released a statement on Wednesday to PerezHilton.com.

“I consider it part of my life’s work and music to push the boundaries of love and acceptance. My apologies for not speaking thoughtfully. To anyone that was hurt, please know that it was furiously unintentional. An honest mistake, requires honesty to make,” she said.

“Whether life’s disabilities, left you outcast bullied or teased, rejoice and love yourself today.”

These days, fans can’t get enough Gaga, and there is more of her to come. On May 7, HBO will air her Madison Square Garden concert from her Monster Ball tour. And her rep told ABC News Radio on Wednesday that she will perform for the season finale of “Saturday Night Live” on May 21, just two days before her “Born This Way” album is released.

Lady Gaga: Madonna Plagiarism Accusation ‘Retarded’

“It’s unfortunate whenever a celebrity uses the ‘r’ word in careless expression.  The use of the ‘r’ word offends millions of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families and their friends.  We remind everyone who is offended by the use of this ugly word that it’s okay to stand up and say that you are offended.  It’s not about freedom of speech, its simply about respect.” — The ‘r’ Word Campaign.
