Action Pledge

Take the original R-Word “My Words Matter” Pledge by Jenna Glatzer:

“I pledge that I will not use the words “retard” or “retarded” to mean “stupid.” I understand that this is hurtful to people who have disabilities and people who love them, so I will be careful with my words. I will also try to remember to pay attention when other people use these words, and I’ll ask them to stop. “

  1. Sadly, I used to use that work all the time. About a year ago something clicked, and I have not said it since. I have yelled at my family, friends, and co workers for saying it. And I am proud to say now, that my family, friends, and coworkers have stopped using it also. Start telling others to not use it! It makes a huge difference.

  2. I used to use the word when I was in high school. In fact, when I was in high school, I used to be scared of people with special needs. There were stories that ran around town about behaviors these individuals would have and they scared me. I moved and got a job as a DSP, working with individuals of all ages with special needs. I was nervous at first, but after 5 minutes of meeting my new friends, I fell in love with the job. I have been working with individuals with special needs for the past 4 years and am majoring in Elementary Inclusive Education.

I pledge that I will NEVER use the words “retarded,” “retard,” or “retards” to put down, or demean anybody! And I pledge that I will confront those when I hear these words being used! I will inform people that these words do, indeed, hurt.
